The story is about two students who study in the same college, Jugnu and Sooraj. Since they live in a hostel, they meet and cross ways quite often. Eventually, they fall in love only to face greater difficulties and obstacles ahead. Jugnu is an orphan who stays with her father’s companion, Chachaji, while Sooraj hails from a wealthy family. Chachaji wishes to get his son, Dilip, married to Jugnu while Sooraj’s parents disapprove of Jugnu as she is poor. Fatefully, Sooraj learns that his father is knee-deep in debt himself. His parents, hence, urge him to marry a rich girl, so that their wealth can be restored with the dowry and jewelry from the girl’s family. However, Sooraj sees this as a sign that he and Jugnu can be together as now, they are both poor and of the same standing. Sooraj’s father, however, blackmails him and his mother secretly requests Jugnu to let go of Sooraj and forget about him. Heartbroken, Jugnu understands and agrees. Jugnu pretends to not love Sooraj and he is left heartbroken too. Sooraj is emotionless and allows his father to toy with his life and marriage as he couldn’t care less about what is taking place in his surroundings. Meanwhile, Jugnu falls ill and sells her awards and trophies to earn some money in order to pay back to her friend who has been spending money on Jugnu’s healthcare. Later, Sooraj’s sister, Shashi secretly visits Jugnu and returns home with a letter addressed to her mother. Sooraj comes across the letter and he finally learns the truth of the situation. After a long time, he visits Jugnu only to be heartbroken once again. The love story of Jugnu and Sooraj remains unfulfilled as the story ends on a tragic note.
